What are the ‘Top 5 Things You Need to Know Before Choosing a Driving Instructor?’
1) Do they hold a current Motor Vehicle Driving Instructors Licence?
The 1st question you should be asking is, “Are they Qualified?’ Sound silly I know, but you would be surprised in all my time teaching people who are learning to drive I have only ever been asked this question once!
To become a Driving Instructor people have to carry out training and be assessed to check their suitability. Once this is passed they are issued with a MVDIL (Motor Vehicle Driving Instructor Licence).
This must be carried at all times and produced if requested by anyone they are teaching to drive. Even if you are learning to drive at a driving school, your individual driving instructor must still carry a Motor Vehicle Driving Instructor License. So don’t forget to ask!
2) Is Your Driving Instructor Working with Children checked?
The 2nd question is particularly important for parents sending their children out to learn to drive. To become a Driving Instructor they first have to pass a medical exam and obtain a police clearance checking for any convictions.
Once this is obtained they can then apply for a Working with Children card before being issued. Again these cards must be carried at all times and produced if requested by anyone they are teaching how to drive. So don’t forget to ask!
3) Does your Driving Instructor have comprehensive Motor Vehicle Insurance with a specialised Driving School Insurance Company?
The 3rd question is an important one. As with any Motor Vehicle Driving Instructor’s car, it needs to be insured but at a higher level than your normal car and should be insured by a specialist company. So don’t forget to ask!
4) Does your Driving Instructor have Structured Driving Lessons?
The 4th question related to Structured Driving Lessons. It is very important that new learner drivers are taught skills that build on new skills and the only way to do this properly is to have Structured Driving Lessons. Combined with that is Driving Lesson Handouts.
After each Lesson your Driving Instructor should be handing out information on what you were just taught. This will help you to absorb the Driving Lesson more and grasp the skills required to pass your Driving Test the first time. So don’t forget to ask!
5) Does your Driving Instructor have a Dual Control Car?
The 5th question you should be asking is, “Do you have a Dual Control car?” This is very important because when you are first learning to drive you have little to no experience. A Dual Control Driving Instructors car allows you to learn with confidence knowing that if you make a bad error or judgement your Driving Instructor is right there and able to correct a wrong before it happens. Your safety and other drivers is a must and a Dual Control Driving Instructors car allows this. So don’t forget to ask!
